Low-dropout linear regulators: quiet, cheap, and tiny. The right choice when the voltage drop is small, the current modest, or the rail feeds noise-sensitive analog/RF circuitry.

How to choose

Compute dissipation first: (Vin − Vout) × I — above a few hundred milliwatts, move to a buck or add one upstream.
For analog/RF rails, check PSRR and output noise, not just dropout.
